Tokyo's 3D billboard says 'meow'

From space ships to roaring lions, three dimensional billboards are bringing brands and art to life in public spaces across the globe. The phenomenon, also going viral last year in Seoul, where a 3D wave  illusion rushed towards pedestrians, uses curved LED screens to create the ultimate 3D illusion.

Now, a billboard in the heart of Tokyo’s Shinkuji district has drawn crowds eager to watch as a giant cat yawns and walks from side to side, greeting commuters with a ‘meow’. At 1am, the cat settles down to sleep for about six hours, resting on its paws.

Measuring over 8 by 18 metres, the billboard is one of the largest in Tokyo, providing the perfect platform for the interactive cat to greet those in high-traffic area.

Due to COVID-19, much of Japan’s bustling nightlife and busy streets have become silenced.  Aiming to inject some happiness, the billboard helps to revive the bright lights of the Shinjuku district. The billboard is also livestreamed for those who are unable to visit the site.
